He's wonderfully gifted at saying nothing at great length, which for Joe Biden passes as "articulate." I've noticed that one of his favorite things to say is "We'll let the process work its way through," or something of that nature, which is a way of voting Present when asked for a yea or nay.Hector Owenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09464231766299961050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-45076419091139658332009-07-25T13:42:09.809-07:002009-07-25T13:42:09.809-07:00I'm not speaking of low IQs here, but of stupi...I'm not speaking of low IQs here, but of stupidity.

My husband and I had this discussion after watching the Wednesday Health Care press conference/debacle.

I had, up to that point, intentionally avoided watching any public appearances by Obama. And I was shocked at how content-less his answers were. The stereotype of him droning on and on, without really saying anything, came to fruition. During the campaign, where everyone is bullshitting, that was to be expected. But when he's up there trying to sell us on his cornerstone issue... unacceptable.

My conclusion that night: Obama is "intelligent" but stupid.

Too bad so many of our academics/intellectuals are so completely bereft of common sense. Stupid, in other words. We can count Obama as one of them. I know anti-intellectualism is a dangerous position to adopt, but jeez guys, give us something to work with.knoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13231876226573540476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-71694882208337750142009-07-24T07:53:28.958-07:002009-07-24T07:53:28.958-07:00Dan Collins linked some similar thoughts to yours ...Dan Collins linked some similar thoughts to yours about Obama: link.chickelithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10773887469972534979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-26274799745850569962009-07-23T17:52:24.586-07:002009-07-23T17:52:24.586-07:00If this bill passes most small businesses will tak...If this bill passes most small businesses will take their workers off the books if they can get away with it.Trooper Yorkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01978703998566102194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-62914955131049201452009-07-23T17:51:44.582-07:002009-07-23T17:51:44.582-07:00Lot's of immigrants don't believe in medic...Lot's of immigrants don't believe in medical insurance. With reference to the discussion here, I'm interested in getting at the facts behind his mother's case. I find this interesting because I lived briefly for two periods in my life without health insurance (also as a student, way before I had a wife and family) so I think I understand the mentality behind people who do so who can afford it (even if they think they can't).

I'm also jaded by an experience I had with some former neighbors. A younger couple (also with two kids) used to live across the street from us (they've since moved, but they kept the house as an investment property and now rent it out).
One day (several years ago) the husband (sole earner) lost his job (he worked at the harbor in San Pedro and commuted from Oceanside). Over the course of a few weeks, we learned that he and his family were without healthcare coverage. More alarmingly, we learned that he was ineligible for COBRA because he had not elected to have health insurance while working. Sure enough, while unemployed, he developed a vision problem related to an old eye injury.
In course of a discussion with him one day, I learned that he had never had insurance through his former employer because he had a pay as you go philosophy. I also learned that as a much younger man (a minor actually) he had injured his eye but, his parents, lacking insurance, had successfully sued a proprietor of some alleged unsafe conditions. The settlement award had actually enabled him to afford the downpayment on his house (and also I presume to pay the bills to fix his eye). His belief was that healthcare insurance was a scam, a philosophy which he based on stories of his grandparents losing money in a private insurance scheme in Mexico (he was a second generation Mexican-American).

I wonder about (but have no data to support) whether a huge growing segment of our population just doesn't believe in the whole concept of private insurance out of trust.chickelithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10773887469972534979noreply@blogger.com
