They're still dealing with conservatives as though they were 19th century, Dickensian, stove-pipe-hatted, orphan beatin', elite-lovin', art-hatin' cro-magnons.

But really, a lot of conservatives today are quite radical. I mean, if you espouse the views of the Founding Fathers, you're a radical, really. Although I bash on 'em a bit, Lucas and Spielberg were complete radicals in the '70s because they made movies that people actually wanted to see! (And you can read plenty of hatin' on them from film critics who preferred movies being made for them, rather than for audiences.

Likewise, if you say "Yes, there are many problems in society, but individuals should be allowed to figure them out for themselves," you're pretty far out.

I wonder, though, how many people ever believed those principles.blakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05430444326700437630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-48618632112382336132008-06-13T07:44:00.000-07:002008-06-13T07:44:00.000-07:00I'm late to this conversation -- I ignored the Alt...I'm late to this conversation -- I ignored the Althouse post at first because I can't watch Woody Allen anymore. Just want to say that I love that while accusing conservatives of having narrow and unimaginative views, Trevor recites the tired laundry list we've all heard 100 times, and it boils down to: Me Smart and Artsy, You Dumb.knoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13231876226573540476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-49500484328471433302008-06-12T21:25:00.000-07:002008-06-12T21:25:00.000-07:00Use those guys and add William Wellman and Michael...Use those guys and add William Wellman and Michael Curtis and you will have some of the best movies ever made.

You could have a cluster of action, westerns, film noir, and mad cap screwball comedy that will blow the doors off.Trooper Yorkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01978703998566102194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-63192827851454125152008-06-12T18:46:00.000-07:002008-06-12T18:46:00.000-07:00Ford, Hawks, Hughes, Huston, Walsh--that'd be quit...Ford, Hawks, Hughes, Huston, Walsh--that'd be quite a conservative-off.

Though I imagine some of them were liberal, they were tough-ass liberals.

The term "liberal" has been roundly abused.

I should do a Ford retrospective or something. Only problem with my local theater is convincing them to devote a screen a night to an old show.

They did it a couple of times and it was great.blakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05430444326700437630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-1121437313629192102008-06-12T18:43:00.000-07:002008-06-12T18:43:00.000-07:00Yeah, the "re-imagining" of slavery has laid it pr...Yeah, the "re-imagining" of slavery has laid it pretty completely at Republican's feet, even though the party was created to end it.

Even people who know this historical fact will claim that that all changed during the Civil Rights movement--when more Reps voted for Civil Rights than Dems.

But then all the racist Dems went to the Rep party. Not a one left in among the Donks.

Except, I guess for the half that didn't vote for Obama. The other half, of course, being sexist.blakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05430444326700437630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7268985416439660021.post-76787445956323995282008-06-12T17:57:00.000-07:002008-06-12T17:57:00.000-07:00What most people lack is a historical perspective?...What most people lack is a historical perspective? When we talk about movies we have to go back to the master, the original, the one and only D. W. Griffith. He is the one who devised the book that all others have followed. As a political artist his masterwork is the now discredited Birth of a Nation. But it was roundly praised and touted by a famous Democrat Woodrow Wilson. People forget that the Democratic Party was the home ground of southern racism and white supremacy. Now your basic radical leftist Kossacks will love to lay this movie and it’s sensibility at the feet of conservative Republicans. It’s not a conservative work but I am sure it would be labeled as such. As it was it established the narrative framework that has been copied endlessly to this very day.

A true conservative filmmaker is the great John Ford. His patriotic themes and conservative narratives were immensely popular back in the day and it is my contention that Hollywood’s abandonment of this style is one of the reasons so many movies fail at the box office. John Ford was heavily influenced by his brother Francis who was an acolyte of Griffith as an actor and a second unit director. Ford influence can be traced in the work of directors as diverse as Kurosawa and Scorsese. The lineal narrative and conservative themes that run through Ford’s movies are conservative art at its best.

Oh I have to go to dinner.
