I've linked to long-time Althouse commenter Victoria (vbspurs) and her "sweatshop of moxie".
Victoria is a British immigrant who's not only legal but naturalized, if I'm not mistaken.
Anyway, she's a great writer and an unrepentant America-lover, and on top of that has all that classy/charming Brit stuff going for her.
Check her out. Right now, she copied a fabulous comment made on the Althouse blog. It's from a black woman explaining why she doesn't support Obama (in response to the observation that 10% of blacks don't support him).

I would never post this on Althouse but I must admit that like most things British, Victoria's appeal escapes me. I guess my natural distaste for perfidious Albion is the reason for this, but hey if you enjoy it all the best.
ReplyDeleteGosh, thanks so much for the kind words, and link to today's blogpost!
ReplyDeleteDespite my failings, as noted below, I'm very happy you could see past them and appreciate the person, and not the details. :)
Cheers,
Victoria
One of my dearest friends in the world was an actress from the island. Had I any reservations about British women in general (or English women in particular) they would have been swept aside by her.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I've already admitted my attraction to French women.
Next, I'll have to confess that I wrote for years for a German tech magazine, and had a company with some Germans.
And, of course, the Italians are like family. I know some Italians who are so wonderful at communicating that it doesn't matter that they don't speak English.
Um, er...I hate the Belgians, though. Does that count for something? (Actually, there are two kinds of Belgians, and I only hate one of them, but that's another story.)
Victoria--
ReplyDeleteI refuse to believe that you have any failings.
Actually, thinking of you has given me a great idea for a post: America/ns portrayed positively by non-American movies, etc.
I snore, Blake. There. Myth busted. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for inspirational blogging! Let me read that thread.
Cheers,
Victoria
Hey your Vicky and Althouse are duking it out!
ReplyDeleteCaaaatttttfffffiiiiigggghhhhttt!!!
There can only be one queen.
ReplyDeleteWell with Titus there, maybe two queens.
As Arte Johnson used to say:
Veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyyyyy Interesting.
Right here, Trooper, right here. Stay classy now.
ReplyDeleteAnd not sexist.
Cheers,
Victoria
Hey Vicky, I am always classy if occasionaly low classy. I am just a rude boy. But I like Titus's stuff and think it's pretty amusing and think it't low rent to complain to the blog host about another blogger. I am a much more recent poster than you and I respect your seniority. But I think everyone is entitled to comment however they want. I often defend Titus even though it is certainly not my cup of tea. Don't you know that 90% of it is bullshit and acting out. Some of it even has the ring of truth especially his graduation story. The raw emotion of it can be daunting as well as the crudity, but it beats the boring ipso facto shit that the legal drones shoot out. Who are we to tell people what they can say? Personally I would give douches like Trumpit and Freder two behind the ear and leave them in a dumpster, but it's not for me to say.
ReplyDeleteI find the whole thing very interesting.
And I am very sexist. Sorry that's just the way I roll.
ReplyDeleteI snore, Blake. There. Myth busted. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you do so lyrically.
Actually, sometimes his crudeness is dead on.
ReplyDeleteYou know, when the post is on some academic onanism, and he draws a parallel to the morning's BM.
Other times it just seems juvenile but I sort of figured the whole thing to be an act. There are a lot of people on Althouse I ignore completely or at least frequently.
And there are a lot of sock puppets on Althouse, too. Some very clever and some not so much.
Sorry Trooper, this conversation makes me uncomfortable. Finding you speaking about me behind my back on another blog was disconcerting enough, but the sexist admission is just a deal-breaker with me.
ReplyDeleteLet's not further ruin Blake's commentary section with a to-and-fro gossip sesssion about yet another blog commenter, which if I replied would be pile-on since he's not here to defend him (as I, by luck, was).
Now, let me see about my lyrical snoring, Blake. Yankee Doodle Dandy, perhaps?
To tie in with your America: Heck Yeah! sentiments. ;)
Cheers,
Victoria
I liked Freder better when he was working for Fritz Lang in the silent movies. That thing a little while back, when he was arguing about physics while completely unaware, or in denial, of the law of conservation of mass-energy, oh my.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm very pleased indeed to see that Victoria has decided to write more often. Here's a question for you, Victoria, if you should happen to return here and see it: Are you more fond of
1) Stilton, old Port, and cricket
2) Cheddar, Real Ale, and bowls
3) Vindaloo, Watney's, and footy?
I like 'em all myself, though I would have to say I lean in the cheddar-and-cider direction, having spent many an evening singing that sort of thing.
Wow, I'm glad I checked this commentary area once more, Hector!
ReplyDeleteI used to be a football fanatic, but you know, unlike 99% of the British public, I have never liked Indian, don't miss it one whit, and I am not much of a drinker.
Having said that, I'll choose Door Number A.
I could never pass up a good Melton Mowbray. I just bought some Stilton on Amazon.
Yummo. ;)
Enjoy!
Victoria
Best wishes on that! The Stilton, I mean. It's difficult enough to find cheese that has been properly handled when one can inspect it oneself. I meet so many people who don't like Brie, for instance, because they think it tastes like ammonia; but all that shows is that they have never had good Brie, since so much of it that is sold in supermarkets is mishandled at some point. When your Stilton is coming by mail -- hmm. Maybe it could be good. Maybe you could drop a comment here to let us know if "cheese from Amazon" is a possibility?
ReplyDeleteHey your Vicky and Althouse are duking it out!
ReplyDeleteCaaaatttttfffffiiiiigggghhhhttt!!!
I didn't see that anywhere, Troop. Was it on Althouse or Sundries?
Yesterday Freder said that PDFs use "a lot less storage" than plain-text. That is so mind-bogglingly wrong, I can't imagine where he got that idea from.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be nothing that he holds forth on that anyone else knows about that is actually true. Just talking facts, here, not politics.
Victoria, is it weird to talk about others here? I mention Althouse posters in my posts all the time, and try to link to their blogs (though I do forget).
With a very few exceptions, I would welcome any of the Althouse commenters here.
Oh, and I could totally go for some cheese blogging.
ReplyDeleteHector: Arrived yesterday! So far, Stilton doesn't pass muster. I, at least, am better off at my local speciality grocer's. Ah well. Worth a try, I guess.
ReplyDeleteBlake: No worries! :)
Cheers,
Victoria
I did not have high hopes for cheese by mail, so I'm not seriously let down by that report. Thank you Victoria for going first into the fray.
