I'm curious about the tone of voice. Was it more like "I dunno." with a falling pitch; or "I don'tknow!" with a rising pitch and a bit of a wail? The difference between not caring and suddenly realizing that caring was required.
A little older, and you might get "I don't know!" The oppositional tone, implying that it's none of your darn business.
