Chomskyism

Eric S. Raymond writes on patriotism:

I respect that tradition of patriotism by dissent because I am part of it. I’m both an American patriot and a libertarian anarchist. I both love my country and would cheerfully abolish its government and many of its laws as soon as practically possible, in service of a higher loyalty to individual liberty; “Where liberty dwells, there is my country”. Even Americans who disagree strongly with my political stance have no real difficulty understanding how it is compatible with American patriotism.

and coins the term "chomskyism" as a counterpart to "chauvinism". (h/t Instapundit.)

  1. I'm pleased to see that ESR is blogging again. And to see that Victoria has posted on the very same ESR piece, a different quote, but from the same piece. The American Revolution came from what would now be considered the right, the French Revolution, from the left; although it is common to consider the two as similar, they were not similar at all.

  2. Yeah, I thought it was interesting that we glommed on to the same piece--and she picked the perfect quote for her topic.

It's interesting to examine the French Revolution for its spectacular failure. I'm not sure the French even acknowledge it. I mean, they look at Napoleon as a hero, fercryinoutloud.
