Movies Seen in 2008

Seventy-three movies in the theater in 2008. Almost none of them alone, most with popcorn. That's some cash right there. These were plucked from reviews I did for the blog; it's possible that I missed some.

  1. Are they doing double features anymore anywhere? Any duplicate viewings? I saw Bolt 3-D twice and Madagascar 2 twice because I was splitting up the kids.

Pretty impressive list. For our family [still needing a babysitter] a night at the movies costs $100 at least, so we choose fewer and I really rely on good reviews.

  2. Wow, I only saw four of them so far on pay per view.

This seems like a big waste of time like those fools who spend all their time typing away on the internet.

  3. Oh, good point. I saw Dark Knight and Wall-E twice. Maybe one other. (Gran Torino will get a second viewing, too.)

    No double features anywhere anymore.

Yeah, babysitters drive up the cost, no doubt. But I saw most of these with The Boy, and most of them at our "art" theater so the average cost for both us (with popcorn and soda) was between $10-$20.

These movies ranged from a few "OK" to mostly "pretty good" and quite a few "excellent". There weren't any, I don't think, that we really hated, though "Before the Rains" was a disappointment.

    What, going to the movies?

    Meh, it's a cheap hobby.

  5. Pre-toddler days, we used to go to the movies constantly too. But in our case it was super cheap because the manager waved us in for free half the time. (Nice guy!)

This year, I only saw these in the theater:

    The Dark Knight
    Gran Torino
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull
    Iron Man
    Prince Caspian
    Rambo
    Tropic Thunder

Aside from Indiana Jones, they were all good. The home theater in the basement gets most of our business these days. I don't know how many movies we watched down there though. A lot.

  6. Ah, yes, that's also true: The manager of our local Laemmle waves us in from time-to-time or comps us on popocorn.

Smart lady. She's also got them doing two-for-one Sunday nights and free-popcorn Thursdays.

And when they hire new employees, she makes sure they know who we are.

The Laemmle is like the Trader Joes of theaters: They hire smarter, more offbeat people than the regular chains and there's a certain cachet to working there.

  7. No, I saw Son of Rambow but I could not talk the boy into seeing Rambo.

  8. Son of Rambow

I enjoyed that one. Also enjoyed Rambo.

  9. Yeah, I think I'd like it but I just couldn't sell it. I couldn't get him to sit through the original "First Blood".
