Treadmill Desk, Week 12

It would actually make more sense, in a sort of OCD way, to rest on the 13th week. That way there'd be four rest periods in a year.

I don't even know if I'm going to repeat this. But my mind immediately went there. Don't even know if I'm going to make it through a whole week without the treadmill. We'll see. So far, zero.
--- --- --- --- --- --- ---
I did an hour on Sunday while finishing my taxes and an hour-and-a-half on Tuesday while working. I'm walking better, though, in general, which makes me wonder if I have to strike some sort of balance-thingy.

I'm more an extremist. Well, so far, so good, anyway. We'll see how it plays out.
--- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Well, that was interesting. I moved a lot better this week without the treadmill.

I may have to resort to some sort of moderation.

Treadmill Desk, Week 11

Friday: 140 minutes.

I was lucky to get this much in, given the time at work.

Monday: 404 minutes

Tuesday: 431 minutes

I didn't think I was going to do well this week time-wise but it's looking pretty good now. I might crack 30 hours.

Wednesday: 300 minutes

Well, maybe not....

Thursday: 455 minutes

I did most of my taxes on the treadmill today. That way, at least something productive was going on.

Not quite 29 hours. I may take week 12 off. Maybe every 12th week.... Not sure why. Maybe just to break things up a bit. I might not be able to do it, actually. I do get a little antsy.

Treadmill Desk, Week 10

Friday: 390 minutes

Good start. I'm finding my walking shoes inadequate to the task, however. I walked yesterday and today in some stiff soled sandals.

Saturday: 130 minutes

Sunday: 75 minutes

Monday: 300 minutes so far....360 in toto.

Tomorrow is a day at the doctor's so there won't be as much time to tread, but if I can get another six hours on Wednesday and Thursday, that'll be pretty good for the week.

Tuesday: 130 minutes

Wednesday: 240 minutes

It was hard to get these four hours in today. Too many things pulling me away from my desk....

Thursday: 430 minutes.

Hey, that's 27 and 3/4 an hour. Not too shabby. Tomorrow's an in-the-office day, so light on the treadmill. But that's okay; my feet are recuperating very quickly these days.

Treadmill Desk, Week 9

Friday: 400 minutes

Monday: 75 minutes

Tuesday: 340 minutes

Wednesday: 240 minutes

Thursday: 300 minutes (so far)....355 in total.

To round it out to 1400 minutes or...23 hours and 20 minutes. Close to what I did back on Feb 5th.

Lubed the 'mill today. Weird thing happened: I couldn't find the lube in the stores, and the lube from Sole hadn't arrived. Since I was starting to hearing--probably imaginary--noises come from the 'mill, I decided to get some overnighted from Amazon.

This morning, the package arrives and it's not at all what I ordered. It doesn't look like the right brand, there's no applicator want, and the "instructions" consist of a folded up paper that don't look like they apply to my machine.

So I call Sole, give 'em my sob story, they say, it's okay, just use the tube, it'll be fine. (There's some scary stuff about warranty voiding in the manual.) And, by the way, I should've got the shipment yesterday by FedEx. But they'll send out another.

Meanwhile, I'm getting ready to fire off a nasty review on Amazon, but first I lube the 'mill up and...a package from Amazon arrives. It contains the exact thing I ordered.

Light bulb goes on.

Oh, right. The "crappy lube" must've come from the company. (I didn't receive the package and it wasn't in a FedEx envelope.)

Called Sole back, apologized for being an idiot. Life goes on.

Treadmill Desk, Week 8

Friday: 190 minutes

I suspect we'll have a big week. The water is helping.

Monday: 300 minutes

Got a warning to lubricate the belt. Apparently, you're supposed to do that every 180 hours. But I'm already up to 540 and this is the first time the warning came up. Called Sole and they said if it wasn't making any noise (it's not) there should be no problem. Probably the fact that I've used it at very low speeds helps. They've sent out the lube that should've been in the original packaging.

Tuesday: 210 minutes

Another trip to the doc for The Boy, but she seemed pleased with his progress. We're not scheduled again for two weeks.

Wednesday: 150 minutes

Well, maybe not such a big week after all.

Thursday: 390 minutes

Not quite 21 hours. I was a bit derailed by The Boy's illness. Fortunately, he's mostly through it now.

Skin and Bones

I don't want to get in the middle of the fat-battle between Trooper York and Freeman Hunt, but my attention was directed to this Sports Illustrated "models taking their own pictures" post.

Some of these women strike me as too thin, where "too thin" is a purely aesthetic consideration. My friend (mentioned in the Stacked Decks post linked above) was very thin, too, and used to fret putting on five pounds here and there. But, in person, she didn't look too skinny in person, usually. Meanwhile she had some other friends from back in the day who were the opposite type (shorter and curvier), who were clearly on the higher end of the BMI scale. They also looked fine in person.

I know "the camera adds ten pounds" but it also can subtract ten at certain angles. (There are angles on Chris Reeves in the Superman movies where he looks positively skinny, e.g.)

I've been thinking about weight lately because I haven't lost any. (I lost about ten pounds last year just due to changes in lifestyle, but none since I started doing the treadmill.) I suspect if I keep drinking water I'll lose weight, though. It seems to change your sense of taste and fullness.

Should be interesting.

Treadmill Desk, Week 7

Friday: 210 minutes

Gonna be a light week, I suspect. Three-day weekend, more diabetic stuff on Tuesday, but I'll see if I can't do eight hours on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday: 200 minutes

Wednesday: 310 minutes

Gonna take 8 hours on Thursday to get to 20 hours this week....

Thursday: 370 minutes

Not quite. 1090 minutes which is...18 hours? Not too bad for the 3-day weekend. Been a productive work week, too.

(Snake) Oil and Water Mix

The Boy has been easing into a nutritional program to help with his diabetes and I have a rule that I don't do unto my children what I wouldn't myself endure, so I've been easing into the same program myself.

The first part of the program involves drinking distilled water at regular intervals. This is somewhat controversial, as you might discover if you were to Google it. But I have reason to trust the doctor I'm dealing with, who's very knowledgeable about body chemistry.

Actually, water is an interesting sticking point for a lot of programs. You hear a lot about people being dehydrated, for example, but Adele Davis eschewed the eight-glasses-a-day meme saying she'd never met anyone who did that who wasn't seriously deficient in some vitamins. (The water flushing water-soluble vitamins out of the system.) The IAHP warns against too much fluid on the basis of over-hydration leading to seizures. (One of the effects of a seizure is to push fluid out of the body with saliva and urination.)

Conventional medicine seems largley unconcerned with the quality of fluids--water, Gatorade, whatever, it's all fluid, though most draw the line at soda--but alternative medicine hyperventilates over the water's mineral quality, fluoridation, source, etc.

For myself, if I have a glass of water at my desk that I can easily refill, I'll end up drinking a gallon in a day. But I have no dog in the what-sort-of-water-and-how-much race; I have no idea.

So, yesterday, I drank the prescribed amounts at the prescribed intervals for about 3/4s of the amount prescribed me. (I started late and ran out of time.)

Those of you who are regular readers know that part of my treadmill desk environment is to reduce some stiffness in my achilles' tendons that I acquired during a particularly sedentary job. I had made great progress. The only stiffness I'd feel any more was after sitting for a while or sleeping; I'd take about a minute to loosen up. You also might recall that I was experiencing a bit of numbness from the early days from when I had overdone.

This morning I was walking around for several minutes and realized there was no stiffness at all in my tendons. Just a very slight ache. As I was writing this, I had to stop, get off the treadmill, take off my shoes and double-check my foot--numbness all gone.

Wild, eh?

Then, of course, I've reported on the stiffness in my back. (As I've mentioned, I've always been tight: Even during my martial arts years, with tons of stretching, I was never much of a kicker.) The downside of doing all the walking seemed to be that I had to make sure I did some periodic back stretches or I'd feel sort of locked at the waist. (And I'd forget to do those stretches; it's been weeks since the last time.)

As of this morning--without a single stretch--I can now comfortably grab my legs just above my ankles.

That's a hell of a placebo. I love a good placebo.

On the flipside, I was warned that this water regiment would likely lead to a cold due, allegedly, to the body using this water to flush out things it hasn't been able to before. No cold yet, but a remarkable amount of goop in the throat.

Treadmill Desk, Week 6

Friday: 260 minutes

I've ended up taking the weekends off lately due to various paternal responsibilities. This, and the fact that I have more such responsibilities this week likely to cut into treadmill time will probably lead to a lower overall hour count, unless I can get in some eight-hour days.

Monday: 315 minutes

Tuesday: 18 minutes

Wednesday: 195 minutes so far....

Thursday: 180 minutes

968 minutes. Only about 16 hours this week, due to Tuesday. And probably the less next week, with the three-day weekend and more diabetes stuff on Tuesday.

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Treadmill Desk, Week 5

Friday: Unknown minutes. I'm blanking on Friday for some reason.

UPDATE: Friday: 360 minutes. (I remember now that I made a point of going six hours, up from five on Thursday.)

Took the weekend off.

Monday: 140 minutes

It was a work day but I put in a couple hours afterward.

Tuesday: 330 minutes

Wednesday: 320 minutes

Thursday: 260 minutes

Total: 1410 minutes

23 1/2 hours, a bit shy of my 25 hour goal. Next week's looking busy, away from the treadmill, but we'll see how it goes.

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Treadmill Desk, Week 4

Friday: 280 minutes

Saturday: 60 minutes

Tuesday: 360 minutes

This morning I was feeling pretty agile, just minor foot pain. I decided to put it to the test by going for six hours straight, which went pretty well, though I'm a bit stiff now. Still, it's good to make progress.

Wednesday: 210 minutes

Thursday: 300 minutes

So...lesseee....1210 minutes. 20 hours. Not quite double last week, but respectable. Let's see if I can't get to 25 next week.

Friday, January 23, 2009

Treadmill Desk, Week 3

Taking care of the ill this week so not much time on the ol' treadmill.

Tuesday: 200 minutes
Wednesday: 200 minutes
Thursday: 320 minutes

So...12 hours, which isn't that bad for only three days. I think I can probably double that this week barring ... barriers.

Treadmill Desk, Redux

Darcy asked what benefits I've gained from doing the treadmill.

It's a little hard to describe without explaining where I was (which in turn leads to how I got there, where I've been--my whole life story!), and it's not very dramatic, but here goes:

  • Stronger legs. Sort of in the "duh" category, but, yeah, lots of leg strength, speed, endurance, etc. The eight hours at Knott's last Halloween went by really easy, for example.
  • Overall improved mobility. For me, the negative effect of doing 5-8 hours a day several days in a row is that my lower back tends to tighten up. Despite this, my mobility has improved, but I've found it's really helpful to add some other exercises (the Wii Fit, e.g. or some ab exercises).
  • I stay awake. Sounds odd, but it's not hard to get so comfortable and so ergonomic at your desk, that a bad night-before can turn into falling asleep at the desk. It definitely raises your alertness level.
  • I have lost a little weight, though not much. In theory, if I get back to the 30-40 hours, I should start losing some weight--that's when I lost the 5-ish pounds I did lose--but that's not really the point.
  • The main thing is feeling generally better. My theory (expounded upon in previous posts) is that bodies were meant to be moving.
I'm probably forgetting plenty of stuff, but this is the stuff that comes to mind.

Treadmill Desk, Year 1, Week 2

Friday: 60 minutes
Monday: 30 minutes
Tuesday: 210 minutes

Feet hurt today. I think because I'm cranking up the speed. Gonna crank it back down and try for more time....

Wednesday: 270 minutes

I never mention how much I actually walk not on the treadmill. Anyway, I put the speed back down to .5 and I think that helped.

Thursday: 270 minutes

So...840 minutes....14 hours. (And about 4-5 hours of non-treadmill walking.) Not bad. It's not leg weakness that stops me anymore, it's just weird aches, pains and numbness. That stuff all seems to be subsiding, though.

I'm not going to push it. That's how I got into trouble in the first place.

Treadmill Desk, Year 1, Week 1

I figure to keep doing my weekly logs (that vanished over the holiday season). Last year would be "year zero". And by resetting yearly, I never have to count over 53....

I can't really do a "treadmill desk blog" because, well, there's nothing to say. Maybe I'll post pictures of my knotty calf muscles.

Friday: 180 minutes

Monday: 270 minutes

Tuesday: 100 minutes.

We had some duct work going on today so not much time on the treadmill. There's now a vent on the ceiling about five feet behind me that should come in handy in the summer.

Wednesday: 240 minutes.

Thursday: 270 minutes.

Total: 1,060 minutes or 17 2/3rds hours, which is the most I've done since the holidays. I did boost up the speed to .7 mph, though. I'm weraing shoes all the time now, at least until I feel like my feet have fully recovered.

Not bad. I guess the odds are against me keeping this up for another six months. Heh.

Treadmill Desk, Week 18

Friday: 213 minutes

This whole "active lifestyle" thing is starting to take shape. A lot of people don't like exercise, but I do. I just get into bad habits and chained to my computers. For me the discipline isn't the working out, but the stopping working.

Treadmill Desk, Weeks 16 & 17

I haven't posted much on my treadmill desk lately because I've cut back over the past few weeks, first to curb foot pain and then just because of the holidays. I've probably only done in the 10-15 hour a week range.

For the most part this hasn't had any negative effects. I'm getting more agile. The recurring problem I have is that once I get on the treadmill it's easy to overdo. I wasn't home for most of today, yet I still ended up doing about three-and-a-half hours. I probably should have stopped an hour sooner.

I've been doing more of the Wii Fit, too. Although it works the legs heavily, it does so in an entirely different way, with subtle controlled movements. It reminds me of Callanetics. It does matter, though, if I do a long day on the treadmill. It's harder to do those subtle, controlled movements after seven hours on a treadmill.

The Boy and I are starting weightlifting this week, too. I've heard that's very good for blood sugar.

Friday, December 5, 2008

Treadmill Desk, weeks 14 & 15

I decided around week 13 to take it easy and see if my feet would recover from the previous several months of abuse. They did, but they were quick to remind me of their feelings on the whole 30+-hours-a-week of walking when I started up again, so I opted to get some shoes.

So, a couple hours later and a $117 (!) poorer, I'm now back in business.

As a side note, we've been doing a lot the Wii Fit around here, too, and it's interesting to me how little the walking helps as far as doing Wii Fit games and exercises. If anything, I'm weaker after doing 4-8 hours of walking. Presumably that will change. (Or I'll just continue deteriorating unto my untimely death.)

I think Jack LaLanne said that exercising was supposed to be a pain in the ass. He also says you're supposed to exercise them all, every day, but there's no agreement on how many there are, apparently--estimates range from the 600s to the 800s--so I don't know how you're supposed to do that. It's darkly amusing that you could miss exercising the 798th muscle and end up plummeting to your death or having a fatal fibrulomantosis because you missed one tiny muscle.

Treadmill Desk, Week 13

Friday: 123 minutes

Saturday: 170 minutes

Sunday: 83 minutes

Monday: 100 minutes

Tuesday: 157 minutes

Wednesday: 300 minutes

Thursday: 92 minutes

1025 minutes. I backed off a bit because of foot pain. I'm getting a lot fewer incidents like this, but I may break down and buy some real shoes...

Friday, November 14, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Week 12

Saturday: 100 minutes.

Sunday: 90 minutes.

Monday: 0 minutes

Tuesday: 0 minutes

Wednesday: 270 minutes

Thursday: 360 minutes

Friday: 140 minutes

A paltry ... uh ... sixteen hours? Actually, on Sunday, after the light day on Saturday I started having foot pain that made me think, oh crap, plantar fasciitis. So I backed off and then stayed backed off until it went away.

The plan was to go light on Wednesday and Thursday but that didn't work out. I got busy. I backed off today because the six hours on Thursday made me a little nervous. I may indeed have to go for real shoes. (Real expensive shoes.)

Friday, November 7, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Week 11

Saturday: 40 minutes

My legs were tired, like workout tired, so I decided to cut it short today.

Sunday: 70 minutes

What a craptastic day. I'm not Joe the Plumber nor even Les the HVAC guy, and floundering around in the attic made me glad of that fact. Did something to my ankle, boding ill for this week's walking.

But Alan the Woodworker has cobbled me up some arm sleeves for the treadmill! I'll have to put up a before and after to show how it looks. (I'm Blake the computer guy for Alan, so, you know....)

Monday: 0 minutes

My ankle was still tweaked this morning. Alan came over and the wooden sleeves didn't fit. Just one of those days, I guess.

Tuesday: 390 minutes.

My ankle's still a little bit tweaked but treadmill walking doesn't seem to bother it. (I sort of thought I'd end up doing less time, but before I knew it, six-and-a-half hours were gone.)

Wednesday: 340 minutes.

I've got my new sleeves, so the desk is much more stable. Yeah!

Thursday: 400 minutes

Off to a slow start this week but ending strong. Interestingly, the piled-up-books-on-top-of-styrofoam-with-a-board-on-top was pretty stable; the new sleeves are rock solid. I'm recklessly balancing martini glasses on the edge, just for giggles.

Friday: 305 minutes

Total: 1505 minutes. 25 hours. Not bad for a week when I hurt my ankle.

Friday, October 31, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Week 10

Saturday: 240 minutes.

Sunday: 140 minutes.

Interesting note: The scale says I've lost five pounds in the last four (three?) weeks. It's not necessarily significant, particularly, since I can have a five pound variation either way in any given day depending on how much or how little I eat. Five pounds a month is about the amount projected by the inventor of the concept. (OK, 57 pounds a year which is four-and-three-quarters pounds a month, but are we going to split hairs here?)

The only thing I've added is a little stretch at 100 minute intervals, so perhaps there is a metabolic change going on.

Monday: 365 minutes.

Tuesday: 340 minutes.

Wednesday: 260 minutes.

Thursday: 360 minutes.

Looks like I'll be hitting the 30 hour mark pretty easily. That's good. It's weird, but I've had this interesting shift of pains through the weeks, I presume as different muscles get stronger and take the load off the improper ones. My back is better (though I'm still tight as a drum). Now it's more outer thighs, lower calves and a bit around the joints. Except for a slight feeling of overwork on the ball of the right foot, the various "wrong" pains have all gone away.

The last couple of weeks, I've slowed down to .5 mph again. I do that because I know my tendency is to crank it up a bit and suffer a little. (Years of karate training.) The fact that I've had to build up to this level suggests that I was way farther out of shape them most of the people who have done this. Or maybe that they're hiding this sort of stuff. But, seriously, I was on the way to making myself an invalid, I think.

Friday: 221 minutes. Trick 'r treatin cuts into the 'millin'. The kids had fun, though. The Boy went out with his pal and came back about 90 minutes later with 20 pounds of candy. Times like this he hates being diabetic.

Weekly total: 1926 minutes. Unless I did the math wrong, that puts me three minutes over week eight, my record to date. And that week I did one eight hour day. I'm actually not sure what to make of it. My legs feel a bit weak this week, though I had no problem escorting The Flower on her second round of treating. I felt close to a leg cramp, though.

At the same time, the 30+ hour mark is good, I think. And doing a bit every day seems smarter and more effective than stuffing in the super long days. Still guessing at this part.

Friday, October 24, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Week 9

Saturday: 100 minutes.

I expected to get in more. It was a frustrating morning in a lot of ways.

Sunday: Looking like zero. They key to the treadmill has vanished. I've rounded up the usual suspects to no avail.

Monday: 150 minutes. The key turned up neatly tucked away in a small box for a computer fan. Courtesy the Barbarienne, no doubt.

Tuesday: 360 minutes. Only ten hours or so this week so far. I'd have to do 7-8 hours per day the rest of the week to do as much as I did last week. I'll be lucky to break 30, really.

Wednesday: 243 minutes.

Thursday: 377 minutes. Only twenty hours so far, and I have a dental appointment tomorrow. Hmmph. This week's been hard, too. My legs are tired for some reason.

Friday: 350 minutes.

I'll tally later tonight.

Weekly Total: 1480 minutes. Not quite 25 hours. About what I did back in week 6, going every day. So I guess there's been an increase there. When I am on the treadmill it is easier and I can go longer.

Friday, October 17, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Week 8

Saturday: 270 minutes. A lot for a Saturday. What up wid dat?

Sunday: 70 minutes.

Monday: 100 minutes

Tuesday: 480 minutes

Wednesday: 373 minutes

I haven't really been keeping track of my weekly time this week, but I think I'll beat last week pretty easily.

Thursday: 390 minutes

So, I'm up to 1,683 which passes last week already. Good, I guess.

Friday: 240 minutes.

A little over 32 hours--a big jump from last week and pretty close to my target of 35 hours. I may end up going lighter next week because I have to tighten up the Sole, The Flower's got a performance or two I need to see, I've got a day in the office, and a lot of away-from-the-desk work to do.

Plus, "at the desk" usually means either working (good) or reading up on the day's events (bad, depressing).

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Semi-Hiatus

Laptop's in the repair shop so I'm out of commission 'less I'm on the treadmill.

Did eight hours today at .7 mph. Pretty much non-stop. I'm a little sore.

I should be back tomorrow when I get my laptop back.

Friday, October 10, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Week 7

Saturday: 130 minutes.

Sunday: 90 minutes.

Monday: 390 minutes. (I think a record for longest consecutive time.) I was deeply involved in programming for this; the treadmill pretty much vanished, which is how it should be. I'm doing more barefoot as well.

Tuesday: 110 minutes. (I was trying to get some reading done. Little luck there, though.)

Wednesday: 360 minutes.

Thursday: 210 minutes. (1290, so far.)

Friday: 320 minutes.

Total: 1610 minutes. Just shy of 27 hours. Last two days were surprisingly rough and I actually had a leg cramp this morning. Little weird. I think I'd like to hit 35 hours a week on a regular basis.

Oh, I did kick up the speed a bit to 0.7-0.8 mph and I didn't drop back down to 0.5 at all--that's actually become to slow. So that might be the reason.

Friday, October 3, 2008

Treadmill, Week 6

Saturday: 300 minutes. A lot for a Saturday but I had some catching up to do after Knott's.

Sunday: 110 minutes. Some of you have asked whether I've lost any weight over the past few months. The answer is: I don't think so. I don't keep track very closely, but I did weight myself about a month ago and my weight was the same today. And it was the same as it was back in June when I was doing the Wii fit. (Which I do plan to start up again; I'm not doing it now just because I don't have the Wii hooked up.) However, I didn't weigh myself between June and August, and it's possible that I gained some weight during that period.

You get the idea that it's not very important to me? I do care, but weight is such an imperfect measure. I think I have lost some fat, however, based on the fit of my clothes. I don't have a good measure of fat vs. muscle.

I do need to lose some weight, as well, mind you. But, again, the primary focus is on increasing mobility.

Monday: 360 minutes. Didn't have to go in today. This was very productive. I've started looking into incorporating a stretching program. Strength and endurance are less of an issue now--I'm walking faster on the treadmill now, for longer and with less difficulty--but now lower back stiffness is becoming more prominent.

Tuesday: 310 minutes. I did the longest stretch yet in one go: 4 hours. This is also, I think the most time I've done on two consecutive days at over 11 hours. The weird foot numbness my early over-eager experiments engendered got dramatically better this morning, and then suddenly tonight. Some sort of inflammation finally going down, maybe?

Wednesday: 100 minutes. Had to work in the office today. It was a nice break to be able to come home and get on the treadmill. Weird, eh?

Thursday: 360 minutes. Basically six hours straight. I kicked it up a notch from Tuesday. I've been going a bit faster, too. I've started thinking about getting some real arm supports for the treadmill to rest my plank on.

Friday: 250 minutes. I had non-desk stuff to do. I have found that I'm not set up for reading a book. Need a book holder.

Weekly total:1790 minutes. Just shy of 30 hours. 1490 minutes. So...just shy of 25 hours. I've added a small amount of stretching which has helped mobility. I've achieved that particular goal rather quickly. Now I need a new one....

Friday, September 26, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 35

0 minutes, again, today. Only without the eight hours at Knott's to balance it out.

We did not get a lot of sleep the night before. The Boy had some stomach problems after the park (at least it was after) and didn't get much sleep. He felt pretty crummy all day and I had a lot of non-computer stuff to do.

Physically, though, I was totally up to doing a bunch of hours. That's cool. I have a few occasional foot issues left, but otherwise, I'd say I've successfully integrated the treadmill into my workday.

This ends week 5 since I got the new treadmill. I'll probably start changing to a weekly post that I update daily, starting on Saturday.

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 34

0 Minutes. I did, however, walk eight hours at Knott's Halloween Haunt.

I was actually less sore afterwards than an average day on the treadmill.

So, in that sense, mission accomplished. The Boy, who has been swimming more than walking, had a little more trouble with the legs. And The Flower's shins bothered her a bit the next morning.

Heh. The old man's still got a little life in him, I guess.

I am stiffer than John McCain at a debate, though, so I'm going to add some stretching to the daily routine.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 33

Did over 200 minutes today, but consciously scaled back due to the trip to Knott's tomorrow.

Treadmill Desk, Day 32

319 minutes. OK, I'm getting bored with posting every day. I may do a weekly roundup or something....

Monday, September 22, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 31

100 minutes. Had to go in to the office today. We had a meeting, which was rather hard to sit through. (I mean, physically hard.)

Sunday, September 21, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 30

216 minutes today. The nice thing was that it was completely organic. I've gotten to where I just turn on the treadmill whenever I'm at my desk.

And I'm back to barefoot, with some flip-flops nearby if needed.

Treadmill Desk, Day 28

320 minutes. This is the end of week four. My, how time flies.

I'm back to doing some barefoot time, which is nice.

Treadmill Desk, Day 27

240 minutes today. Ended up doing a lot of running around away from the desk today.

Knott's Halloween Haunt is next week. I'm not even concerned.

Site Reorientation!

Lately, people have been coming here for the treadmill desk posts, so I feel like I should play to that audience.

Problem is, I've never been able to form a cohesive "lifestyle". You ever notice that? Everybody who hawks a book on exercise or diet, talks about "lifestyle". (As Carlin used to say, "Genghis Khan had an active outdoor lifestyle.")

I'm just a guy walkin' on a treadmill. I don't go to meetings to talk about the treadmill-desk lifestyle. I don't know anybody else who does this, and don't really care to. I mean, I wouldn't object if someone I knew did it. ("The treadmill-desk is my bit! We're through!") But I don't seek an overarching theme or purpose or motif in my life.

So I'm going to probably let you treadmill-desk enthusiasts down, just as I do the pointy-breast seekers.

But I will field any treadmill-desk questions you might have. (I'll field any breast questions you have, too, but I'm unlikely to have any significant insight on that subject.)

And someday maybe we can all get together and not walk somewhere.

Treadmill Desk, Day 26

230 minutes so far today. (UPDATE: 270 minutes by the end of the day.) I'm posting at 7PM so I might get some more time in before the night is up. But since Althouse posted on the treadmill desk, I thought I'd summarize my experience to date. (For those of you just joining in, this is day 26 since I "got serious". I actually did over three weeks of a trial, and then reset the counter when my new treadmill arrived. So I've been doing this for 2 months now.)

I've been detailing my trek on my blog under keyword [sic] "treadmill desk". But rather than make you go through that, I'll spell out my strategy:

1. Buy a cheap treadmill--I mean, really cheap (<$100 or free, if you can find one), off of Craig's list--and a plank of wood. The treadmill should have long, straight arms for you to put the plank of wood on.

2. Fiddle with the height of the board by stacking books underneath. (Some people carve wood rests or what have you, but I have no talent in that area, plus I kind of like the "change on a whim" feel. What seems good today may not tomorrow.)

3. Give it a try for several weeks. Try to run through all your daily tasks, including the ones tht require the greatest concentration and steadiest hands. If you can only do 90% of your work while walking, make sure you have a way to do that other 10% without disrupting things too much.

4. While you're doing this, note the issues you're having so that when the time comes for a better treadmill, you'll know exactly what you want.

In my case, my cheap ($50) treadmill overheated, which forced my hand to buying a new one sooner than I would've liked. I had a hard time running it for more than an hour. It was also really loud and really hot. I finally went with a new Sole machine that gets put into hotels, with a two year warranty. Very quiet, doesn't seem to radiate heat.

My big mistakes were: pushing myself to hit the eight hour mark as soon as possible, which resulted in a lot of stiffness that wouldn't have occurred had I built up more slowly; also, I didn't wear shoes at all at first, though I'm not sure if that would have been such a big deal had I not forced myself to the eight hour mark.

The benefits have been that a stiffness in my ankles and feet that had been building for years has almost completely gone away in the past two months. I don't find myself imbued with lots of energy that others seem to have--at least not yet--but one doesn't fall asleep at a treadmill desk, either.

I haven't been tracking my weight, particularly, so I can't speak to that. It has improved my appetite, however.

Treadmill Desk, Day 25

0 minutes. Had to work on site today.

It was actually kinda weird.

We were being picketed.

By Jews!

Treadmill Desk, Day 24

270 to 280 minutes. The acclimation process is ending, I can tell. 2-3 hours is about as long as I can without a break, not because I'm tired but because of the feet. I'll try going barefoot again later. Then, if that doesn't work, I may go to a real shoe. I hope I don't have to, though. My feet are happiest outside of shoes.

I'm getting fewer issues elsewhere in the body as well, which is a good sign that I've acclimated. Initially, I'd have a lot of lower back stiffness after a couple of hours. And then a whole lot at the end of the day after sitting down for a while.

Next up will be some sort of stretching. I've always been stiff, even in martial arts. I mean, I got to the point where I could kick someone in the head, but it never came easy. (On the other hand, it's lots more reliable to kick low.)

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 23

140 minutes. Easily could've done more. But one of the things I'm using the treadmill desk for is to get away from the computer.

Treadmill Desk Day 20

I ended up doing 5 hours today, fairly comfortably.

Bought some more shoes at the summer clearance from Wal-Mart. They have some really cheap pairs going for 50 cents, so I picked up a couple of those to see if they'd do the trick.

Why so many shoes?

  1. Dogs
  2. The Boy (his feet are the same size as mine, so he's been known to commandeer shoes)
  3. They're cheap; they'll break for sure.
  4. It'll be a year before I can buy them again at this price.
  5. I can keep spares in the car. One thing about being a parent is that you have more situations where you suddenly need an extra set of clothes or shoes than you might expect.

I think we're very close to the time where the treadmill-desk just becomes a fact of life, not something extraordinary.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 19

3 hours today. Playing it cautious. Maybe even a little wussy.

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 18

Four hours today. I did two and started get the numb feeling in the feet. But I actually found it hard to sit on my butt to work after a (rather short) while.

So I ended up doing two hours more. That was probably a shade too much.

Oh, I bought several sets of cheap thongs--wait, that could cause some confusion. I mean some cheap flip-flops for a $1.25 at the Wal-Greens. The summer stuff is marked down 75%. I may even pick up a few more pairs, since I don't expect them to last. (It's actually not the bottom that wears out, but the thong part itself comes detached, from what I've seen.)

Footwear seems to help. I don't like shoes much, but I'll need to wear them for a while. (Meade recommended them two weeks ago.)

What I think happens is that while my thighs are strong enough to do the walking, the other supporting muscles are not, maybe not even the calves. When they get fatigued, my body weight ends up shifting around, stressing parts of my foot, ankle, lower back, etc., that shouldn't be. I think that translates to foot pain and numbness.

As long as I can still play piano with my feet, I think it's not too serious.

In general, my mobility is way up, so even if I do have to build-up for a while before being able to do a full day, I'm still getting the primary benefit.

Monday, September 8, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 17

Basically 0 minutes again. Not really zero. I did a little yesterday and today but mostly just to see where I had gone wrong and how to fix.

This site recommends shoes and also, interestingly, a recumbent bike desk. They have a link to a site that used to sell a Geek-a-Cycle for what would seem to be a good price ($400 for bike & desk).

I think I would find the recumbence awkward--I did think about a stationary bike setup before doing the treadmill desk--and I'm not sure that the motion would be conducive to either working or to stretch out my achilles tendons. Also, the body position would be pretty much completely static with just the legs moving, which I think would be fatiguing. (When I walk I tend to change pace and stride, walk sideways or backwards, and use breaks in work to mix things up a abit.)

Sunday, September 7, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 16

0 minutes again today. It just seemed smart, since the feeling is coming back to my feet.

I haven't lost any weight, for what that matters. I'm eating more, though. I'm hungry quite a bit.

That's not my primary interest: Mobility is definitely improving. Before I started, I could actually move pretty well after I warmed up, but I'm starting faster and getting stiff slower. That's progress.

Treadmill Desk, Day 15

Day off, baby! I did, like, eight minutes. But I was out most of the day and it seemed like a good idea to give the tootsies a rest.

They're not hurting, but they are numb in spots. That's probably not good. I may end up taking tomorrow off as well. And Monday I'm in the office so I'll be going light then.

Friday, September 5, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 15

I thought, after yesterday, I might have to take it easy today, but I did 420 minutes and it wasn't bad at all. I could've done more but I decided to back off a bit. By switching from shoes to bare feet and back, I eliminated most of the discomfort I had, and at seven hours switching wasn't helping.

I was actually really busy, and kept the treadmill at 0.5 the whole time. I didn't have time to mess with it, and I'm in no rush. I do have a small problem of sometimes wanting to work at the desk while my feet still hurt, so the key is to get to where 8 hours is no big deal, in case I need to put in a few more.

Last night The Boy used the treadmill at 3mph for about an hour--while playing Flash games!

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 14

A whopping 460 minutes today. Just shy of eight hours.

I had the treadmill down slow, at around .5 and .6 miles. This greatly reduced the discomfort, though the last 20-30 minutes were still a bit tough.

My feet hurt, so I tried wearing shoes. That worked for a while, then my feet started hurting again. So I took the shoes off. That worked...for a while.

So I think what's going on is just the sheer repetitiveness of it. By changing up, I can keep the feet pretty pain-free. By the end, after stopping for an hour or so, they hurt like a mofo. That seems to be a common issue: Inactivity makes the feet hurt when you start up again.

Sort of like plantar fasciitis.

Before I started doing this, I had stiffness in my achilles tendons. This also abated somewhat over time, but never fully. Now I have the foot pain--so I'm still walking like an 80-year-old man--but the ankle and tendons seem pretty loose. And at least the foot pain is a temporary problem, so I actually get to moving at a good clip very quickly.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 13

300 minutes. Went light. Feet are still hurting off-and-on, but otherwise feeling more nimble in the ankle area.

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 12

A whopping 420 minutes today. The last 90 were hard.

I might need to get shoes after all. I don't like shoes.

Still, seven hours. Wrote, tested, debugged a program. That's cool.

Monday, September 1, 2008

Sunday, August 31, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 10

170 minutes today.

Whaddayawant. Day off. Everything's getting smoother. Not much to report.

This is the ultimate goal, of course: The treadmill-desk should be, essentially, transparent.

Saturday, August 30, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 9

240 minutes today. Not bad for a Saturday.

The key thing is that it was actually pretty easy to do. I did most (220m) of it in one stretch while answering e-mail and browsing blogs, not really even noticing.

When you power on the Sole, it briefly shows a lifetime hours/miles count. I sort of figured that's what it was but never bothered to really look at it. I think the former owner put 15 hours or so on it, at about the same pace I'm doing.

Sole needs to watch out for that. Some people'd be pissed to spend $1600 on a machine that one could describe as "used".

Treadmill Desk, Day 8

Over 260 minutes today, which is okay--not bad given the movie break--but I did them all at once. No breaks. So the feet are getting better.

I had a wacky idea that if it got too easy--big talk from a guy who can't do eight hour straight--I could do it on an incline, rather than at faster speeds. I think that'd be more productive than trying to boost the speed.

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 7

Six hours. The last 40 minutes were a bitch, too. And I was pretty wiped out for the next couple hours, too.

I may be pushing it.

Dunno if I'll be able to get in six hours on Friday. "Tropic Thunder"!!

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 6

My day off, in theory. I did three hours today anyway. Really gotta finish this project.

The feet were good, mostly. Better than before, for sure. It's all been pretty positive so far. I'm posting this with a Wednesday date, although it's actually 2AM on Thursday. I'll do that from now on, so the entry is always the last item for the day.

Waiting for the parts from Sole. I guess they didn't overnight 'em.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 5

Day 5, I didn't quite make the six hours. I'm not sure if I did 310 minutes or 350 minutes.

Lost track at one point. Feet started hurting again but they're better now. I had the speed at 0.8 mph at the last two hours to see if that helped the feet. (It didn't.) I think the lack of use on the weekend and Monday was a factor there. Everything was fine Friday. We'll see how I do tomorrow, foot-wise--if it's like Friday where my feet were fine.

The Sole tech support guy called. They seem pretty on the ball. They've given me the opportunity to return the machine a couple of times, but are just going to send out the full hardware kit plus the missing heart monitor.

Unlike the previous treadmill, the current one allows me to do 2.5 hours at a stretch. That's quite helpful. I took a bit of a rest between leg 2 and leg 3, and it was hard to start that third leg. (I took a longer break than I meant to, which is why I didn't hit six hours.) Once I get in some stretching and get acclimated, I think I won't have that problem.

So, thumbs up, for now. I did get some work done, which is the main thing.

Treadmill Desk Day 4

Day 4, 0 minutes.

I went into the office Monday and was pretty much tied up all evening.

I have a theory that all offices eventually turn into Initech from Office Space. We're being asked for car insurance information and being told to put the company on our insurance. In case we're on a business trip and in an accident, presumably, the company isn't liable. (The company doesn't send me anywhere, of course. I even work at home, fercryinoutloud.)

But ask yourself: Is it good for the company?

Anyway, today (Tuesday) is looking good. I've already done an hour. Should be able to get six in today and finish up some big projects.

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Treadmill Desk Day 3

I did 50 minutes on Saturday. The last serious Olympics day. Actually, it was sort of desperate. They showed the entirety of a marathon on NBC and a single-scoring soccer game on Universal--and after it was over, they should the entire single-goal soccer game again.

Good lord, soccer is boring. I know, I know. Typically American of me. But it is. The field is too big.

Soccer fans talk about how the game never stops. Like Hell. It stops all the time. They kick the ball out of bounds. Someone gets fouled and lies, weeping, on his back for five minutes. Pssssh.

Victoria says cricket is baseball on valium. If that's true, soccer is cricket in a persistent vegetative state.

Oh, right, treadmilling: Nothing super exciting to report, except that after my feet hurting like a mofo on Friday, they were fine all Saturday. I really do think I shortened my tendons dramatically during that one death march.

That's encouraging. I'm a little too young to be hobbling around like a nonagenarian.

Saturday, August 23, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 2

I did at least five hours on Friday on the treadmill.

I took a couple of breaks, though. It's not the speed; everything's smooth enough that a 1mph speed is easily doable--except for the feet.

My feet really hurt. So I took a couple of breaks and lowered the speed for a while.

Promisingly, however, Saturday morning my feet were fine, so I'm thinking this will wear off over time.

Sole's customer support is apparently overloaded. I've told my story of woe to Jennifer a couple of times--she has a delicious southern accent, I don't mind--but apparently she's just front line and doesn't send anything out. I'm waiting for a call back from their technical support to itemize what's missing and what they can send out.

It's not stopping me from using it, though it would be were I running.

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 1 (anew)

So, I still don't have the parts and didn't hear from Sole today--I'm going to group all my Sole posts together for potential customers--but I used the treadmill anyway.

Got about five hours in. I suspect that will be the low end of my daily walk. Long days will probably go as long as eight hours. I'll usually hit in the 6-7 range, I suspect.

But, I went from 200 minuntes on the old treadmill, with lots of breaks to let the machine cool down, to 300 on this one. (It's actually a bigger jump since I wasn't doing much this past week while waiting for the treadmill to arrive and then setting it up.)

Observation: My feet hurt. I hope that goes away with time. Perhaps I should wear shoes. But that's crazy talk. Next I'll be saying, "Perhaps I should wear pants." Please. What's the point of working at home if you have to wear pants?

The machine is quiet and smooth and good at ranges from .5 to 1.5 mph, so I can adjust according to what works at the moment.

It does reset itself with abandon, unfortunately. Not exactly abandon, but if I need to take a break for lunch or to bark at the mailman, and stop the machine, it resets itself to zero after about five minutes. And sometimes, the mailman needs a lot of barking at.

Anyway, fun note: We're five weeks exactly from Knott's Scarry Farm's opening day, which is when The Boy and The Flower and I take the day and gallivant around Buena Park. It amounts to over seven hours of walking (from about 6pm to 1am) and The Boy and I have traditionally prepared by going on long nightly walks.

With the desk for me, and him swimming like Phelps, we aren't going to need much special training this year.

I think I need some stretching exercises, though. The lower back is very stiff. And some ab exercises, too.

Treadmill Reboot

Well, the Sole S77 arrived on Tuesday.

After the initial vicissitudes from the previous delivery, the parts in this shipment came in a Food Lion bag, sans a few crucial pieces.

WTF?

I got all the screws, though the manual suggests there should be more of one type there's no place to put the extra ones it suggests are needed. So I think that's a typo.

However, no Allen wrenches. No lube. And as Orlando Jones would helpfully remind us: "There's always time for lubricant." I thought there was supposed to be a heart monitor but I'm not sure that that's the case. One of the arm fittings (they cover the wires from the console to the arm) was a real challenge to put on, and the other seems just grossly mismatched.

The Flower and I put it together, though, which was fun.

I called the Sole and the woman was genuinely horrified at the situation, though she wasn't able to send out a new kit. I'm supposed to be contacted by tech support before the end of the week.

This seems less than optimal. But I'm hanging tight--and I'm using the machine as it is, because I'm not going very fast.

I thought initially it was mashed up at LAX--the box was fairly trashed (again!)--and I thought maybe they had inspected at the airport (I guess it wouldn't have to be LAX) and not bothered to put it back right.

Now I'm thinking this was a return product and it got returned and then shipped out to me without being inspected.

That aside, the machine itself is quite impressive, compared to the one I've been using. (Similar model here.) Granted, that one was half the cost of mine new, and I bought mine off Craig's List for $50. So, no complaints against the old ProForm, and I understand the new ones are better.

However! The Sole S77 is a good example of getting what you pay for (relative to the cheaper Proform).

  • It's really quiet. You can't hear the motor at all. Just the sound of the belt as it moves around, and sometimes not even that. (I haven't figured out what the magic is that makes it quiet.)
  • It's smooth. You set the speed and it transitions smoothly from whereever you are to where you want to be.
  • It's safe. The Proform had some plastic pieces at the end that I could get my feet under if I pulled a George Jetson. This may have been a factor of it being a fold-up (the S77 isn't) or of sloppy construction or just of being used, though.

Although it's not a big issue for me, the S77 is defnitely fancier. The console has a music widget that I'll never use, and some built-in fans that are somewhat useful. Even though I have no heart monitor, you can grap these little motorcycle-like handles on the console to take your pulse, which is kind of cool.

Sort of amusingly, the Proform had a speed problem: It was highly uneven at low speeds. (Maybe at high speeds, too, but I didn't use it at high speeds.) I adjusted to this unconsciously; it never bothered me. The new one is so much smoother I can use it at higher speeds easily. But--this is the sort of funny part--I may develop a program to alter the speeds randomly. My theory is that the speed change is probably good for the brain, though I'm extrapolating from this and other experiments.

The only thing I overlooked--a hazard of exclusively shopping online--is that there are buttons on the arms (for speed and elevation). The desk would smoosh those buttons, though they're well protected and it might not matter. Rather than risk it, I took some styrofoam and carved it to fit over the arm, without touching the buttons.

I was thinking about doing something more elaborate but so far I'm happy with what I have.

Apart from tht, it still remains to be seen about how Sole responds to the issues, but this is a really fine machine for the purpose, at least on the surface.

Anyway, tomorrow I should be able to do a full day of walking and working. I'm thinking of resetting my counter to Day 1, since it's the first day I'll be able to do the full monty.

Weekend Update

I did treadmill over the weekend, but I'm hampered by the stopping of the treadmill.

The new one comes tomorrow, allegedly.

Meanwhile, it's pretty much all Olympics all the time. Everyone's staying up late and looks like they've been beaten with a stick all day, but there are only a few more days to go.

Kelly@LoadedQuestions and I once postulated forming a luge team. (Lying down: how hard can it be?) She likes to point out that there's no luging at the summer Olympics, but I say that's the best way to medal.

I'll post a review of Mirrors later (The Boy sez "it's great!") and try to finish my combat system post, too.

Treadmill Desk, Day 14

100 minutes today. Would've been more but I was awaiting the new machine.

The new treadmill arrived at 1:00am, as a sort of good news/bad news thing.

The good news was that Sole gave me a free upgrade! From the S73, which I had felt was probably good enough, to the S77, which was the machine I had initially looked at, with the stronger motor. Apparently they don't make the S73 anymore. That's a $200 free upgrade which might be good for anyone in the area ordering a machine.

I like these guys. Not just for the upgrade, but for the bad news part. You can tell a lot about a company by how they deal with bad news.

In this case, the bad news was the trucker decided to "help" by taking the machine off the truck himself without using a dolly. So he dragged it a ways, then started turning it end over end. (I'm not making this up!) By the time it hit our driveway, the box was torn in places and there were visible scratches on the unit!

I assume that his goal was to get out of there ASAP, and I sort of wonder if his plan wasn't to high-tail it out of there before anyone noticed the damage. He should have made a lot less damage, though, if that's the case.

We ended up calling the shipping company and not accepting delivery. Then we called Sole, who cheerfully agreed to send us out a new machine. Sweet.

Treadmill Desk, Day 13

0 minutes today!

What's this? Have I given up?

Nah. I could've put in some time, though. I didn't because I'm preparing iteration 2 of the Treadmill Desk. The new machine's supposed to come tomorrow.

Well, that and because the electricians were here at 7:30 in the AM to make sure everything had enough power. I don't know if sleep-deprivation plus a lot of work plus a treadmill is a good combination. (It probably would be. Exercise can reduce some of the negative effects of fatigue, ironically enough.)

I'll probably get less than the desired amount tomorrow, because I'll need to assemble the damn thing, and fiddle with stuff, etc. But Friday should be golden.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 12

I've done 130 minutes so far with more to come.

I did place the order, though I went for the S73 rather than the S77. The main advantage to the latter seemed to be an extra .5 horsepower. I can't see me needing that. At all.

Anyway, that'll be fun. We'll see if I can actually to the full 6-8 hours at a time.

(Pineapple Express tonight!)

Treadmill Desk, Day 11

I didn't use the treadmill yesterday (Monday). A combination of working away from home, and hanging out with the Olympics.

Back on today. I did use the time to scope out a new treadmill. I was going to buy used because, you know, buying new exercise equipment is for dunces, given the huge discounts you get for a used anything. I mean, I got this treadmill for $50, right?

But it overheats, etc. It's not quite the same as buying weights or a bench. This is a machine. It requires maintenance, it breaks down, etc. I'm likely to use it 40 hours a week, so a good warranty will pay for itself.

This machine from Sole is what I'm planning to get. Free delivery and a two-year in-home warranty. Well, hell. In-home is precisely my style. And they sell to hotels, which tells you something about ruggedness. (People are never more careless than with stuff that's not their own.)

So I'm guessing the 2-year thing means they're pretty confident they won't hear from me in those two years.

It's not a folding treadmill, but where I had previously thought that was a minor engineering issue, I'm now understanding requires certain compromises in the quality of the machine. I'm not folding this up, anyway, so no big deal.

Back later with day 12 news.

Treadmill Desk, Day 10

What? Obviously I'm too busy doing all those weekend hijinks to actually write about them! Duh.

Only got in about 100 minutes on the treadmill as The Flower needed some attention. We did some drawing. I made four masterpieces entitled:

  • "They're so cute when they're small."
  • Rainbow Fairy: WTF?
  • The Land That Lunch Forgot
  • A Cosmic View of the ELE that wiped out the dinosaurs.
I'd upload them but I don't own a scanner. Plus, I suck. That wouldn't stop me, actually.

She drew a picture of me as a king. She's still working on my castle. I made the mistake of telling her I liked different color bricks.

Slept too late to cruise for a new treadmill. I may buy a new one just for access to a warranty.

Friday, August 8, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 9

100 minutes so far. But it gave out right at the end of the 100 minutes, so I'm giving it a lot of time to cool off.

Yesterday, we blew a circuit (over and over again, ick) and the treadmill seems to have gotten more erratic.

What's weird is I'm now feeling a little weird about not walking while I'm working. The laptop mousepad actually works pretty well, too; I was a little surprised by that.

I'm about to start up again and see if I can't do another 30-40. 200 minutes seems to be about the max I can get with this machine. Time to take getting a new one seriously.

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Treadmill Desk, Day 8

Just shy of 190 minutes. (Just like yesterday, to be honest.)

The machine didn't stop until 187:55; I had broken my walking into 30 minutes on/30 minutes off. This seemed to work right up until a couple of minutes ago. I was hoping to take it to 200, but didn't quite make it. I'm going to try to fit in another 30 minutes after it's cooled down--but I sort of suspect I'll be lucky to get in 20.

The body is definitely loosening up a bit. This is really the thing that I'm going for. I tried to get a book going with a personal trainer on working out at your desk way back in the '90s, but sadly it didn't fly, and my personal trainer flew off to St Etienne, France. (Hi, Melissa!)

I did some more serious thinking and programming today, and got into a pretty good groove. I'm accustomed to walking around when I need to think about something, but translating that to the treadmill took a few minutes.

If I were to theorize about why I've always walked while trying to solve a problem, I would say that the minor motion of walking, with just enough attention on the environment to keep me from getting totally introverted, is why walking around works. The problem with trying to do the same on the treadmill is that the diversion is entirely different.

But it worked out. And I can go at a higher speed for some tasks. Now if I can just get in a little bit more today....

UPDATE: I managed to get in another 20-30 minutes, so that's good.

Today was the first day I used the laptop. Working with just a keyboard will be generally more sensible, since there's less risk of major damage, but because I have to pause every 30 minutes or so, the laptop is less disruptive when I switch from treadmill to regular chair.

Treadmill Desk, Day 7

190 minutes. A little foot massage over the past few days has eliminated the foot pain I was feeling earlier, and actually may have helped on a larger scale. Or it may be the walking; I'm finding less stiffness in my tendons.

My lower back is much less stiff today. Yeah.

I think I'm capped out at 240 minutes a day on this current treadmill. Since it needs to rest--and things often distract during the time I'm off it--I'll be lucky to get all four hours in a day.

I may switch to the laptop. The "desk" is steady and if I'm on for 30 minutes and off for 30 minutes, it's probably going to be a lot less disruptive to just use the laptop for the whole time.

So far, so good. I'll start getting serious and posting some numbers, if anyone's interested.

Treadmill Desk, Day 6

200 minutes today. I would've done more but for the machine overheating.

And it is hot. The area around my desk is a good ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house.

My lower back is tight. (It always has been. Even extensive stretching hasn't provided much relief over the years.)

When I peeked at ning, I saw a couple of criticisms that, basically, the T-D isn't a panacea. You're only burning 100 calories an hour, and still need to do aerobics and can't expect to lose a bunch of weight doing it.

The guy who's been forwarding the idea would probably disagree but my viewpoint is I don't really care. The main merit of the Treadmill Desk is that you're not sitting on your ass.

I have a friend who has had a lifetime of manual labor jobs. I'm talking hard-ass stuff, lifting heavy weights--doing stuff at 115 pounds that her 250 pound male co-workers find challenging. She's also smoked a lifetime of cigarettes.

The doctor has informed her that she has the lungs of an 18-year-old.

This could be a fluke. It could be genetic. But I think it's because she's had an extraordinarily active lifetime.

I can't really do that. I don't have the skills. But I can do something other than what is probably the worst thing of all: nothing.

At least I think I can. I'll have to do something about the lower back tightness.

Treadmill Desk, Day 5

An hour session, followed by two forty-five minute sessions, followed by another hour. The two 45 minute ones were due to the treadmill shutting off. I waited for a half-an-hour after the first session, and a full hour after the second and third. Weirdly, the fourth session I was able to go for an hour without the treadmill cutting out. The only difference were a couple of bathroom breaks.

This did not turn out to be the trial-by-fire day I was expecting. I've put my old desk chair on the treadmill in-between using it and it sort of works. I'm a good four feet from the screen; the mouse is out of reach, and the keyboard's in my lap.

I'll probably have to get a new treadmill sooner rather than later. I've found working while standing has a very limited utility. (I've never been good at standing around. It seems to stress my lower back. More Wii-Fit may help.)

I'm hungrier than usual.

So far, I haven't come across anything undoable, though I do find, at this point, tiredness and stiffness is a factor. The more tired and stiff I am, the more I sway when I walk. Swaying makes working more challenging, particularly the mouse.

And so it goes.

Treadmill Desk, Day 4

I was roped into going to the movies today, so only about 2:15 on the treadmill. I was planning to alternate hour on/half-hour off. I was planning to hit the road tomorrow, too, and not use the desk but I may put that off.

Observers say it's done me some good; improved my morale, I guess you'd say. I didn't know I was such a crotchety bastard to begin with. I have not experienced the post-treadmill energy this guy talks about. I'm just as likely to fall asleep once I get off it as I was before. (Maybe more so.)

But then, my sleep habits are complex enough for their own blog.

If I can stay home and work tomorrow, it will be the big test. Tons to do across a broad spectrum of tasks. I'm somewhat hampered by not being able to run the machine constantly, but it should be a good test, nonetheless.

(I should add, I think, that "today" means Sunday, even though this is posted in the wee hours of Monday morning.)

Treadmill Desk, Day 3

Today we had a guy with power tools in the bathroom so any attempt to activate the treadmill resulted in blowing a fuse.

As a result I only got in about :40 today. I don't seem to be suffering too heavily from my exertions, however, and a lot of what I do--maybe 90%--is just fine on the treadmill desk. Still need to try more serious "mental exertions", let's call them.

I've been monitoring treadmills on Craig's List and Ebay. Craig's List gives you the best deals but also the riskiest ones. An interesting thing about Ebay is that it's rife with refurbished treadmills with starting price 15% or so lower than the "buy it now" price. What I've noticed is that most of the treadmills are not selling.

This comes as no surprise: Exercise equipment in general, and treadmills in particular, is the most disposable category of consumables. Not because it doesn't last, but because people get bored, or don't find the inspiration they think they're going to, or in some cases because the equipment isn't suitable.

And at that point, the exercise equipment begins to mock. Yes, you know it does. It sits there in the corner, sneering at you, at your lack of committment, at your lard bottom, at your pint of "Chubby Hubby". Cover it with a jacket--go on! You can still see it watching you. Baleful, recriminating, judgmental.

And soon, you'll do anything to get rid of it. But you have to get something for it. You paid so much. If you just give it away, the equipment wins. If you can turn it into a financial windfall, then who's the winner, smartguy?

Or, at least, that's what I imagine goes on in people's heads. As a result, there's always cheap exercise equipment around. But the companies that sell refurbished stuff on eBay seem to position a bunch of stuff at prices that aren't going to sell, which is something I think would be prohibitive given listing costs. It'd be interesting to see how many of these listings actually do sell, and figure out what sort of profit they'd have to be making to break even. You could probably negotiate a good price as a result.

But you'd have to be more obsessive-compulsive than I am.

Treadmill Desk, Day 2

I managed to get three sessions of 90, 75 and 37 minutes on the treadmill today, so not quite 3-and-a-half hours. The fact that it stopped sooner and sooner after each time suggests that my $50 investment may not be good for very long.

My feet hurt. But then, they usually do.

Typing is easy. Positional stuff--mousing--is a little trickier.

I need a few more days to see if this will work. Meanwhile research for the replacement treadmill proceeds. The trick is in the timing: Don't invest any money in a new one if the scheme isn't going to work out, but; don't lose the mo' by having the old one break before I replace it.

Treadmill Desk, Day 1

I rolled out of bed this morning and onto the treadmill. I had to make a few adjustments. The keyboard and mouse were too low, so I propped my plank up with some books. That worked pretty well; answering e-mail and reading is easy enough.

I did a little coding and debugging, too, which worked out all right. I'll do some heavier stuff later.

After running about three hours, with about a 15-20 minute, the treadmill stopped dead.

Huh. $50 doesn't go as far as it used to.

It started up again a few minutes later. I'll have to test the limits of this thing. On 2, off 1, etc. I understand one really needs a commercial treadmill to run it for a full eight hours. (Actually, I've seen commercial treadmills that say you should only run them six hours a day. So, go figger.)

I'll say one thing for it: It does keep you from nodding off.

Treadmill-desk

I wrote that last post on my new treadmill desk. Have you heard of it?

OK, mine doesn't look anywhere near that slick. Mine is a plank of wood on top of a used Proform 770 I picked up on Craig's list for $50. Also, I had to pick up an arm mount for a monitor.

The idea is to replace the time you spend sitting on your ass with time you instead spend walking at a slow pace. Regardless of weight, I tend to think the body needs to be active to function well.

I've got some ergonomic issues to work out, still: The desktop (i.e., my plank of wood) is too low, so that's a ticket to RSI. It might need to be angled away from me, which sounds weird but actually means my hands will be in a normal resting position instead of bent back at the wrist.

So, does it affect my work (negatively)? Can't tell yet. It's not completely unworkable. I'll have to try tackling some particularly challenging problem to see how it goes.
